Pullman’s section on the topics of last resort felt very relevant to me in the context of watching The Real Housewives. Though there are different cities and different women for each of the Real Housewives franchises, what is constant are the big, boisterous personalities of these women. Unsurprisingly, when these personalities come into contact with one another, they clash. There have been many instances of clashing personalities and conflicts throughout the shows. Pullman’s topics of last resort pertain to “self-defense under the worst possible circumstances, when you’ve been caught red-handed, and/or when all of the ways in which you can deny having done it have been proven wrong.” These conflicts happen especially during the end-of-season reunion specials after the shows have aired and all the cast members have seen all of each other’s footage. Here are a few examples I thought of while reading the text.

  • Confess: “Yeah, I did it.” In this specific instance, NeNe Leakes is saying she “said what she said” on her blog about another cast mate’s mother.
  • Deny intent: “I didn’t mean to do it.” Ramona repeatedly says outrageous and offensive things. Then she’ll say she didn’t mean to upset anyone; she was just speaking her mind.
