Are you ready to hear the reality of being a woman and working in the 21st century? I hope so, because this issue is real! It has been statistically proven that if you are a woman working in the professional workforce you are making about 20 percent less than your male counterpart. Yes I said 20 percent! As alarming as it sounds it saddens me that it is the current society that we live in. In today’s society, many people chose to believe that the world has become an equal place. In 2017 people tend to not believe that in some workplaces men and women who hold the exact same job title do not receive the same salary.

With the use of social media and more community conscious thinking shows this issue has been brought to the forefront once again. Television programs like HBO’s Insecure have been tackling the issue within the shows storyline. This eye-opening scene makes it hard for the viewers to to feel the pain women feel when they realize their hard work is not being recognized. Imagine you are opening a check and see a significant increase in your salary and when you look down you see your male counterparts name instead of yours. You two share the same educational background, but you put in two times the hours he does but none of it is being recognized. It hurts doesn’t it?

If working woman feel as if their hard is not being recognized, their drive and passion for the companies succession may depreciate. With this in mind we as business oriented women have to take a stand against this inequality. We must ask the important questions when being interviewed, offered the job, and once we have accepted the job. We should not be afraid to be paid the same if we are doing the same work and share the same if not more education and work experience.

Now what will you do with this information? Will you take a stand and incorporate change or sit back and let women continue to be overlooked?
