Goals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
English 3080 introduces students to the history of written argumentation from a rhetorical perspective and to some of the theories foundational to a western canonical understanding of how persuasion works. Guided by the course textbook (<\/span>George Pullman\u2019s <\/span>Persuasion: History, Theory, Practice<\/span><\/i><\/a>), we will focus on analyzing and composing texts (linguistic and multimodal), attending to their power to persuade. Concepts of rhetorical situation, audience awareness, appeals, and fallacies will be particularly important to our work this semester, ending in a thoroughly considered articulation of one\u2019s philosophy of persuasion: a set of articulated beliefs influencing one\u2019s understanding of the ethics of persuasion in the day-to-day reception and formation of texts. <\/span><\/p>\n
